Barbara Mikulski

  • Democrat Barbara Mikulski is the senior U.S. Senator from Maryland. She also served in the U.S. House of Representatives for a decade. In 2007, Mikulski announced her endorsement of Sen. Hillary Clinton for the Democratic Party's nomination for President.
  • Early Life

    Mikulski attended grad school at the University of Maryland, where she earned a master's degree in social work. She soon became a social activist around Baltimore and first attempted to run for Senate in 1974. Though it was unsuccessful, she was elected to the House two years later.
  • Political Career

    Mikulski has served in the Senate for longer than any other current female Senator, and is tied for the 22nd most senior senator of either gender. She is also the Dean of the Women Senators.
  • Positions

    1. Opposes predatory lending
    2. Strongly supports NASA
    3. Voted against using Armed Forces in Iraq in 1991 and 2002
