Barbara Bachman was stabbed at Beijing's Drum Tower on August 9, 2008, the first day of the Summer Olympic Games. Bachman was attacked by Chinese resident Tang Yongming alongside her husband Todd, daughter Elisabeth Bachman-McCutcheon and their Chinese tour guide. Todd Bachman later died of his injuries while Barbara remains in critical condition.
Bachman's son-in-law, Hugh McCutcheon, is in Beijing to coach the U.S. Olympic men's indoor volleyball team. The family was not in their official "Team USA" apparel at the time of the attack.
