Mel and Patricia Ziegler founded Banana Republic in 1978 and it's been a subsidiary of The Gap Inc since 1983.http://www.fundinguniverse.com/company-histories/Banana-Republic-Inc-Company-History.html It all started when Mel was looking to replace his old military surplus jacket. He bought a British Burma jacket, which Patricia modified to minimize the military look and make it more comfortable.
