The franchise was originally founded by Art Modell, the former Cleveland Browns owner, in 1995. Modell attempted to move the existing Browns team to Baltimore, as the team was in debt and needed a new stadium. The NFL allowed the team to move, but Cleveland kept its team name, records and history. Modell took the existing Browns players to Baltimore and the Browns team was filled with new players. The team was less than successful its first few seasons, failing to make the playoffs their first four years.Sportsecyclopedia.com: Baltimore Ravens
