Introduction
Baldur's Gate is a high-fantasy computer role-playing game developed by BioWare and released in 1998 by Interplay Entertainment. The story follows the player's character growing to maturity through the Time of Troubles, placing an emphasis on character development through dialog and battle. The game also rewards characters for moral decisions made throughout the moral choices made while playing. -
Prologue: Candlekeep
- Begin the game south of the Candlekeep Inn.
- Enter the Inn.
- Talk to Firebead Elvenhair standing next to the fire.
- Accept his quest tp retirm the identify scroll he left with Tethtoril.
- Explore the remainder of the Inn.
- Exit the Inn.
- Speak to all of the tutors through Candlekeep. They teach you how to play the game.
- Head to the east side of the keep.
- Speak to Jondalar for some battle training.
- Find Obe in the cellars to practice fighting with a group.
- Accept quests that are offered whenever you speak to the local people.
- NOTE: You can gain experience points for these minor fetching quests.
- TIP: If your character is a spell caster, memorize all spells prior to taking on the following two assassins.
- Shark in the Priest's quarters will attempt to kill you. You can defeat him easily even with your lack of experience.
- Carbos will try to kill you next. He is also an easy enemy to defeat.
- TIP: Complete all Candlekeep citizen quests before purchasing any equipment.
- Return to the Inn.
- NOTE: If you are playing a thief, pick the lock on the container on the 2nd floor north wall and steal the star sapphire gem.
- Speak to Winthrop, the proprieter.
- Sell anything you have gathered to Winthrop.
- Purchase some body armor, a helmet and a missile weapon.
- Buy an extra short bow and some arrows for Imoen.
- Speak with Gorion on the steps of the library.
- Leave Candlekeep with Gorion.
- As soon as you are outside candlekeep you are ambushed.
- NOTE: Gorion sacrifices his life so you can escape.
Chapter 1: The Friendly Arm Inn
- NOTE: Begin on the Candlekeep Coastway to the east of Candlekeep.
- Wait for Imoen to join you.
- NOTE: Imoen suggests you check out Gorion's body.
- Continue north to the ambush site.
- Pick up Gorion's note and the items scattered on the ground from the battle.
- Read the scroll found on Gorion's body.
- Equip yourself and Imoen with missiles.
- Join up with Xzar and Montaron.
- TIP: Avoid bears and be careful of the wolves.
- Head east to the Coastway.
- A strange old man approaches and asks some questions.
- Continue east and confront the ogre in the sector between Beregost and the Friendly Arm Inn.
- Let the ogre chase after one of the characters in your party.
- Have the remaining characters fire missiles.
- Use Imoen's wand of magic missiles and Xzar's offensive spells to help take the ogre down.
- Grab the magic girdles.
- Continue north to the Friendly Arm Inn.
- NOTE: The mage Tarnesh attacks on the steps of the Inn.
- Get help from the guards outside the Inn to help you take him out.
- Search his body once he is defeated and locate the spell scrolls and a bounty notice.
- Meet up with Jaheira and Khalid, quest givers and friends of Gorion, once inside the Inn.
- NOTE: Jaheira and Khalid join your party and suggest you head south to Beregost to investigate the iron crisis.
- Proceed south to Beregost.
- Break into the Thunderhammer Smithy in the evening.
- Obtain the bastard sword +1.
- Visit Feldepost's Inn and the High Hedge wizard to browse the magical items for sale.
- Purchase any additional equipment you need.
- Meet up with Kagain and Garrick.
- Check out the remaining subquests, people and places within the town of Beregost.
- TIP: If you decide to take out the giant spiders in Landrin's basement, be sure that your party members are equipped with the proper antidotes. Cast an entangle spell to keep the spiders away from your party.
- Continue south through the town.
- Stomp on the ogrillons and retrieve the note from the body.
- NOTE: Keep the note to give to Miranne the next time you are in town.
- Solve any quests you can complete within the town before moving on.
- Purchase any additional equipment you need.
- Continue south on the Coastway south to Nashkell.
- The chapter ends once you enter Nashkel.
Chapter 2: The Nashkel Mines
- NOTE: Begin in Nashkel.
- Review your party to make sure you have not included characters with opposing alignments.
- Pick up Minsc or Edwin on your way to the town Inn.
- Be prepared for an attack by Neira once you get to the Inn.
- Head to the Nashkel Carnival.
- Clear the area for more experience points.
- Free Branwen by purchasing a stone to flesh scroll in Nashkel if you are in need of a cleric.
- Talk to the town mayor, Berrum Ghastkill. Ghastkill requests that you investigate the happenings in the mines to the southeast of town.
- Continue to the south side of town.
- Clear out the sector south of Nashkel to earn a white wolf pelt.
- NOTE: The pelt can be sold for some necessary cash.
- Explore all but the sector to the northwest of town.
- Proceed southeast to the Nashkel Mines.
- Solve the Prism quest by taking out Greywolf to earn his +2 long sword.
- Go to the mine pit in the northwest corner.
- Talk to Emerson for permission to enter the mines.
- Speak with the guards at the mine entrance to gain access to the mine.
- Talk to the miners for details about the occurrences.
- Head down into the mine.
- TIP: Have a thief detect and disarm the traps on the third level and watch out for kobold commandos.
- Pick up Joseph's ring on the floor.
- Continue down to the fourth level.
- Once you get to the fourth level, you will need to defeat the evil cleric Molahey.
- TIP: Do not let Mulahey barter for additional time.
- Retrieve the Holy Symbol from his body.
- Rescue Xan.
- Locate the chest in Molahey's room.
- Find the two letters in the chest from Molahey's superior Tazok to end the chapter.
Chapter 3: The Bandits
- NOTE: This is a really quick chapter. Take time to explore for more experience points. You will need them prior to taking on the challenges in Chapter 4.
- Exit the mines.
- Return to Nashkel.
- Locate Berrum Ghastkill in front of the temple.
- Speak to him to collect your reward.
- Head east of the Nashkel carnival for magic items.
- If Minsc is a member of your party, clear out the areas near the Gnoll Stronghold.
- Take out the Gnoll Stronghold itself.
- Pick up Dynaheir if you need a mage.
- Take out Bassilus in the sector south of High Hedge for 5,000 gold.
- Pick up Melicamp in the sector south of High Hedge.
- Purchase magic items from the High Hedge sector.
- TIP: Don't enter Firewine Bridge or Ulcaster for a few more levels.
- Summon monsters in front of your party.
- Take out the sirens to the south of Candlekeep to gain experience points.
- Continue north to Beregost.
- Pick up Kivan.
- Complete a quest for Perdue.
- Enter Feldepost's Inn on the west side of the town.
- Confront Tranzig on the second floor and decide from one of two choices:
- Kill him and remove a letter from his body that indicates the bandit meeting location.
- Allow Tranzig to surrender. He will then tell you the bandit camp location.
- Head northeast and enter the Woods of the Sharp Teeth.
- Allow yourself to be caught either by Teven in Larswood or Raiken in Peldvale. #Tell them that you want to join them.
- Go with them to the Bandit Camp.
- Interview with Tazok.
- NOTE: Tazok will grant you access to the camp once you have sufficiently impressed him.
- Wander through the camp.
- Speak to the bandits to learn more about them.
- Head to the east side of the camp.
- Enter Tazok's tent.
- Prepare for an attack by four of Tazok's men.
- Defeat the four bandits.
- Speak to their prisoner, Endar Sai, who has information about the Iron Throne at the root of the bandits and the iron shortage.
- Disarm the chest in the tent.
- Examine the chest contents and locate two documents from Tazok's boss.
- The contents of the letters direct you to Cloakwood.
Chapter 4: Cloakwood Forest
- Finish exploring the sectors to the south of Baldur's Gate.
- NOTE: There are five Cloakwood sectors. These need to be done in order.
- TIP: Be prepared. Spiders and web traps abound in Bloakwood. Have freedom potions on hand and have a thief scout for traps.
- Travel to the
- Travel to the new Cloakwood area next to the Friendly Arm Inn.
- Pick up Coran, a master archer in the first sector.
- Continue through each sector until you reach the mine area.
- Send several fireballs directly at Centeol in the second Cloakwood sector to take him out with his spider guards. This earns the Spider Bane sword.
- When you get to the fourth area, watch out for the wyvern nest in the cave.
- TIP: Be prepared to quickly "unpoison" your party.
- Use area of effect spells, e.g., fireball, web, stinking cloud, to take out groups of wyverns before they can harm your party.
- Proceed through all of the Cloakwood areas until you reach the mine area.
- Continue east when you reach the mining sector.
- Enter the palisade from the southwest corner.
- Have a thief scout ahead to prepare tactically for what is to come. This will also allow your mage to launch deadly area of effect spells.
- Defeat Drasus and his party above the mine entrance.
- TIP: Take out the mages first.
- Continue to the bailey in the northeast.
- Enter the mine from inside.
- Head to the northeast corner of the first level.
- NOTE: A miner tells you to get the key for the plug from Davaeorn to flood the mines.
- Defeat Hareishan on the second level.
- Open the door to the prison in the room behind him.
- Give Rill 100 gold so that he can free the other slaves.
- Yeslick the dwarf will offer to join your party and will tell you to flood the mines to get rid of the Iron Throne.
- Continue to make your way down into the mine.
- When you get to the third level, head to the far southern end to continue down to the fourth.
- TIP: Be prepared for Davaeorn's attack midway through the fourth level.
- NOTE: Disarm Davaeorn's traps as soon as you get to the fourth level.
- Davaeorn, a powerful mage, will attack once you get to the middle of the level.
- Summon some creatures to lead the attack and to prevent your party from being targeted by his spells.
- TIP: Use a Dispel Magic spell against him to eliminate his protective spells and more easily take him down.#Take the key once he is defeated.
- Locate and read the three letters on his body.
Chapter 5: Baldur's Gate
- Enter the lift on the fourth level of the Cloakwood Mine to return to the first level.
- Give 100 gold to Rill on the mine's second floor.
- Give the key to the miner on the first floor standing near the plug and he will flood the mines.
- Backtrack through Cloakwood forest.
- Proceed to the city of Baldur's Gate and begin to thoroughly explore the town.
- Pick up the Helm of Balduran in a secret compartment on the second floor of the Helm and Cloak Inn.
- Pick up the Cloak of Balduran from Quenash, a "lady of the evening" in the Undercellar. The undercellar can be accessed either through the sewers or the Blushing Mermaid Inn.
- Pick up the quest to free Lothandar if he initiates the quest.
- NOTE: You need to solve the quest once it has begun or your party will die at the end of ten days.
- TIP: Do not enter the Iron Throne headquarters in the center of the southern part of the city until you have completed all of Scar's subquests.
- Continue to Wyrm's Crossing.
- Scar offers you a subquest and makes his way to the Flaming Fist Compound in Southwest Baldur's Gate.
- Complete the first quest and return to Scar for a second.
- Once the second subquest is completed, Scar takes you to Duke Eltan.
- Duke Eltan asks you to investigate the Iron Throne.
- Pick up the bastard sword +1/+3 vs. shapeshifters from Alden Sashenstar.
- Proceed to the southern part of Baldur's Gate.
- Enter the Iron Throne building.
- Kill the guards that confront you.
- Make your way to the third floor.
- Meet the Emisary Tar on the third floor.
- Destus Gurn mistakes you for Emisary Tar on the fourth floor and invites you to accompany him to the fifth floor to discuss current issues with leaders of the Iron Throne.
- Threaten the merchants in the back rooms of the fourth floor.
- NOTE: They tell you that Reiltar, the leader of the Iron Throne in Baldur's Gate, is attending a conference in Candlekeep.
- Continue to the fifth floor.
- Gather the notes from the top floor of the Iron Throne building.
- Fight Zhalimar if you wish. This is a very tough battle and an optional fight.
- Return to Duke Eltan in the Flaming Fist Compound with the notes.
- Tell him that you need to find Rieltar in Candlekeep.
- Duke Eltan provides you with a valuable book to allow you entrance into the keep.
Chapter 6: Return to Candlekeep
- Begin this chapter in front of Candlekeep.
- Give the book you received from Duke Eltan to the guard to be permitted to enter.#Make your way to the library in the center of the keep.
- Ascend to the second floor.
- Meet up with Koveras who claims to be a friend of Gorion.
- Koveras offers you a magic ring of protection and encourages you to wipe out the Iron Throne leaders and attack Rieltar while he is at his weakest.
- Locate Rieltar and his associates in the northernmost room on the third floor.
- Talk to them if you like.
- NOTE: You do not have proof of any wrongdoing on their part, so attacking them is optional while they are enjoying sanctuary in the library. They will not attack you either unless you make the first move. However, Rieltar and his crew will be killed off shortly whether or not you take action. If you want the additional magic items earned by doing the job yourself, go for it.
- Contine to the fifth floor and meet up with Piato.
- Piato directs you to Gorion's old room, the third room along the southwest wall.
- Enter Gorion's room.
- Locate the chest.
- Look inside to find the letter Gorion wrote to you before his death.
- You learn from the letter that your birth father is Bhaal, the former god of murder.
- Continue to the sixth floor.
- You are arrested by the gatewarden for the murder of Rieltar (whether or not you truly committed the act).
- Ulraunt finds you guilty of the charge.
- You are sentenced to be executed in Baldur's Gate.
- Tethtoril appears to teleport you to the catacombs underneath the library.
- NOTE: The Candlekeep catacombs contain three separate areas, each containing a fair share of traps.
- TIP: All of the NPCs you encounter in the catacombs except Deder and Arkanis are dopplegangers. Do not let your guard down or believe anything they say.
- Use an invisible thief equipped with the boots of speed to scout the map.
- Make your way through all three catacomb areas.
- Prepare for a rough attack by Prat and his party in the third catacomb area.
- Cast a Protection from Petrification spell to defeat the two greater basilisks guarding the catacomb exit.
- As you prepare to exit, Diarmid (mistaking you for Prat) tells you to meet up with Sarevok in the Iron Throne in Baldur's Gate.
Chapter 7: The Final Confrontation
- NOTE: Your goals for Chapter 7's final confrontation are:
- Confront Cynthia at the Iron Throne building and obtain Sarevok's diary
- Kill the assassins in the Undercellar to obtain an invitation to Sarevok's coronation
- Save Eltan in the Flaming Fist HQ
- Disrupt the coronation
- Follow Sarevok to the Thieves' Guild and onto the Undercity
- Exit the catacombs.
- Begin outside the walls of Candlekeep.
- Return to Baldur's Gate.
- Speak to the people of Baldur's Gate to find out what has happened in your absence.
- If you happen to be arrested, Neb, another prisoner, will show you the secret exit location.
- Head over to Sorcerous Sundries in East Baldur's Gate.
- Talk to Delthyr, one of the harpers.
- Delthyr tells you that Scar has been assassinated and that Duke Eltan is critically ill.
- Delthyr also warns you that you are wanted by the Flaming Fist.
- Delthyr suggests that you break into the Iron Throne citadel to learn more details.
- Speak to Tamoko in the same general area next.
- Tamoko warns you that Eltan's healer is not to be trusted.
- Tamoko asks you to meet her in front of the Flaming Fist Compound.
- Make your way to Southwest Baldur's Gate to the front of the Flaming Fist Compound and meet up with Tamoko.
- Tamoko extracts your promise to defeat Sarevok's plans while sparing his lfie.
- Tamoko tells you that Duke Entar's assassins are in the undercellar and that her rival, Sarevok's mistress, is in the Iron Throne Citadel.
- Storm the Flaming Fist Compound.
- Defeat Benjy and his mercenaries.
- Confront Rashad, Duke Eltan's healer, on the second floor.
- Rashad transforms into a greater doppleganger.
- Pick up Duke Eltan.
- Return to the harbormaster in South Baldur's Gate with Duke Eltan.
- Enter the Iron Throne Citadel in South Baldur's Gate.
- Sarevok has left the Iron Throne in shambles. Many members are deserting.
- Confront Cythandria, Sarevok's lover, on the fifth floor with some ogre guards.
- Defeat her.
- Obtain two letters from Sarevok's assassins and Sarevok's diary.
- Make your way into the sewers below Baldur's Gate.
- Find the entrance into the Undercellar.
- Slyth and Krystin will confront you as you approach the middle of the cellar.
- Cast a dispel magic spell as soon as possible.
- Haste some of your fighters or use oil of speed to even the odds against Slyth.
- Once the assassins Slyth and Krystin are defeated, find the invitation from Sarevok to Slyth on Slyth's body.
- Return to North Baldur's Gate and make your way to the Duchal Palace.
- Be sure to have Sarevok's diary and the notes from the assassins in the undercellar.
- Take a few giant strength potions and use oil of speed or cast haste on your characters.
- Show the invitation to Bill in front of the Duchal Palace in order to gain entrance to the palace.
- The other dukes are in the process of installing Sarekov as a new duke as your party enters.
- After the coronation speech, the noblemen transform into greater doppelgangers, attacking both your party and the dukes.
- Assisted by the Flaming Fist enforcers, you must ensure that at least one of the dukes survives the attack.
- Cast a dispel magic spell on the greater dopplegangers to slow them down. #Once the dopplegangers are dead, and the battle ends, show Belt and Liia either the letters from Sarevok to the assassin Slyth or Sarekov's diary.
- Sarekov becomes enraged and attacks everyone. You rally to the fight, but he quickly flees after taking a few hits.
- Belt teleports your party to the Thieves Guild.
- Climb down the stairs and enter the maze.
- Find your way through the maze.
- Be careful of hidden traps.
- At the end of the maze you will find Winski, Sarevok's mentor who has been left for dead.
- Once you leave the maze, you will be in the Undercity.
- A group of mercenaries hired by the Iron Throne head offices confront your party.
- The leader of the mercenaries, Rahvim, will attack your party with Arrows of Detonation, making him a difficult enemy.
- Tamoko will approach your party once again in front of the ancient temple. It is possible to avoid killing her.
- Inside the temple Sarevok and the last of his faithful followers will attack your party. This will be a very difficult battle.
- You can make it easier by casting area damage spells or wands before you see the enemies.
- Watch out for the traps in the room, especially the ones in the skull in the center of the room.
- Defeat Sarevok and the game will be over.
