Baja Earthquake

On April 4, 2010, Easter Sunday, a 6.9 magnitude earthquake occurred. It was centered a few miles south of the border town, Mexicalli. While there were no initial reports of damage or injury, the tremors were felt as far away as Las Vegas, Nevada, and Phoenix, Arizona. The quake occurred at 3:40 pm PST. During the week that preceded the major earthquake, many smaller earthquakes were felt, including 4 in the previous 24 hour period.

All Los Angeles fire stations have reported in with no power outages reported, but are checking for structural damage of a few buildings. Disneyland temporarily suspended operations pending a safety check of each ride. Several people were trapped in different elevators across the Los Angeles area, and in Elysian Fields a busted water main was found, but it is unknown if it the damage was caused by the earthquake. http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/wire/ktla-earthquake,0,6948498.story

Earlier Baja Earthquakes

A 4.8 magnitude earthquake was registered off the coast of Baja California, Mexico on February 1, 2010. The U.S. Geological Survey originally estimated the quake at 5.0 on the Richter Scale. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,584472,00.html

The quake, which occurred at approximately 6:20AM Pacific Time, was centered nearly 13 miles offshore from Rosarito in Mexico, and roughly 18 miles from Imperial Beach, California.

The quake could be felt as far away as San Diego, California. According to Associated Press reports, the San Diego Sheriff's Department has not received word of any damage or injuries sustained as a result of the earthquake.

Back on August 3, 2009, a 6.9 magnitude earthquake also hit off the coast of Baja California, Mexico. The February 1 earthquake marks the third such instance in which a quake of what the U.S. Geological Survey refers to as a "significant earthquake" has occurred along the California coast in 2010. http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eqinthenews/ The USGS registered the depth of this quake at 6.8 kilometers. Rosarito is located roughly 35 miles south of the Mexican-United States border.

This earthquake comes on the heels of the devastating Haiti Earthquake that struck the island nation of Haiti back on January 12 which to date has claimed over 100,000 lives.
