Bad Brains

  • Bad Brains are a hardcore punk rock band from Washington, DC. They are considered to be one of the pioneers of hardcore and have had a lasting influence on rock—due to their unique musical style, as well as the fact that they were one of the few well-known African-American rock bands of their time. Originally a jazz-fusion combo known as Mind Power, the quartet switched styles after hearing punk bands such as The Dickies and The Sex Pistols.
  • Music

Due to a background as jazz fusion players, the Bad Brains were one of the few punk bands to bring true musical virtuosity to the genre. This can be heard in the speed and precision of their playing, but also in the occasional jazz chording and other elements (such as the scat intro to 1989's "With The Quickness"). Perhaps heir most unique addition to hardcore however, is the use of reggae. While previous punk bands, such as The Clash, experimented with reggae, Bad Brains albums alternated furious hardcore songs with authentic, traditional dub reggae tracks.
  • Key Albums

Bad Brains, 1982. Only available on cassette upon its release, the debut is crudely recorded, but showcases all of the band's originality and virtuosity.

Rock for Light, 1983. The second effort, produced by The Cars's Ric Ocasek, contains some of the same songs as the self-titled album, but re-recorded in full-color.

I Against I, 1986. Showing an evolution of style, I Against I is the first Bad Brains album to add elements of thrash metal. The title track is a roaring anthem against violence.

The Quickness, 1989. This album continues to incorporate thrash without losing the rawness of hardcore. It includes the controversial "Don't Blow Bubbles," which was interpreted by critics to be homophobic.

Build A Nation, 2007. This was the original lineup's first album together in 12 years, produced by the Beastie Boys' Adam Yauch.
