  • Bacon Salt is a product which promises to add the flavor of bacon, but without the calories, fat and sodium of the real McCoy. Made by J&D's, the makers of Baconnaise, Bacon Salt is marketed as a "seasoned salt".Creative Loafing: Make everything taste like bacon with Bacon Salt

Bacon Salt appeared in a seven minute segment on the April 24, 2009, broadcast of The Oprah Winfrey Show. During the segment, Winfrey exclaimed, “It tastes like bacon, and I like it.” The segment also included a panel of four judges tasting the company's sister product, Baconnaise.

  • Inventing Bacon Salt

According to the company's website, the idea for Bacon Salt was invented at a kosher wedding, where the manufacturer-to-be Justin Esch told the fellow attendees what they were missing by never eating bacon. In 2007, Esch and his coworker Dave Lefkow began to work on a recipe in their spare time off their work at an IT company.

They were able to realize their dream when Lefkow's three-year-old son won a $5,000 on America's Funniest Home Videos in a hilarious spot in which he beans his father while learning how to hit a baseball. The final recipe is completely kosher and vegetarian, has no calories, no fat, and low sodium.JD Foods: Bacon Salt
