All of the surviving six species of tigers are listed, to some degree, as being endangered, due in large part to human encroachment on their natural habitats.
A mature female tiger may give birth to a litter of cubs, usually between two and four, every two or three years. It is estimated that less than half of the tiger cubs born in the wild survive to maturity.http://nationalzoo.si.edu/Publications/ZooGoer/1998/2/tigerfacts.cfm However, captive tiger breeding programs have proven relatively successful and several litters of tiger cubs are born every year in zoos all over the world.
