Second hand and Gently used
A good venue for clothing for the budget conscious new mother may be second hand stores. Babies grow so fast that they are often not in their clothes long enough to wear the new off of them. A growing number of second hand stores that cater to the discerning mother are popping up in many communities. Once Upon a Child is a good example of this. They buy used clothing from mothers and then meticulously go through them and re-sell those that are without stains, holes, or tears.
E-bay often features mothers cleaning out a baby closet to make room for new clothes for a growing child and offer some very trendy fashions at cost.
If you do not want to have to figure shipping into your cost you may look at local listings such as Craigs list or local garage sales that may feature baby clothes. Be sure to wash any second hand clothes that you purchase.
Sizing
Sizing is always based on the age of the baby. In most cases there will be an age range on an outfit such as a onesie. In this case, always buy a bit larger. The usual sizing ranges are 0-3 months, 3-6 months, 6-9 months, 12 months, 18 months, and 24 months. These clothes are designed to accommodate the diaper where as when you start to get into the older sizes the clothes tend to slim down and not be so accommodating to a baby moving in a diaper.
Be sure when buying clothes to give you baby plenty of room. You do not want the baby to be wading in his/her outfit but be sure that it is not constricting on the arms or legs either. Because babies grow rapidly you should add a size or two and also be aware that certain baby soft fabrics can shrink easily due to their delicate nature.
