Azerbaijan is the largest and most populated country in the South Caucasus region of Eurasia. It is predominantly Muslim and its terrain is mainly mountainous, except for the agricultural center of the Kura River Valley. From 1922 to 1991, the country was part of the Soviet Union.
History
The region of modern Azerbaijan was the site of cultural and territorial disputes in ancient times. Since the Middle Ages, Turkish culture and Islam have dominated Azerbaijan, although the region of Nagorno-Karabakh has remained largely Christian and ethnically Armenian. Between 1988 and 1994, Armenia and Azerbaijan fought over Nagorno-Karabakh—as of 2008, the status of the region was still in dispute. Azerbaijan seceded from the Soviet Union on August 30, 1991.
