Ayahuasca is a hallucinogenic beverage made from a combination of several plants. It has been used for hundreds of years by natives of the Amazon Rainforest for religious and medicinal purposes. It is reputed to have an unspeakably foul taste. In 2006, the United States Supreme Court unanimously decided that it was legal for certain religious organizations to use the drug. Currently, scientists are studying its possible use in the treatment of drug addiction and alcoholism, as well as the treatment of anxiety and depressive disorders.
