Axolotl

The axolotl, or Mexican walking fish, is a variety of salamander found in the waters of Lake Xochimilco near Mexico City, Mexico. Due to pollution and predation by other creatures, the axolotl is classified as an endangered species. The species' disappearance is seen as a symptom of worsening environmental conditions in the area.TreeHugger: Ubercool "Mexican Walking Fish" Nearing Extinction (November 5, 2008)

Plans for Conservation

There are various ideas in the scientific community about how to save the axolotl. Possible solutions include the opening of a sanctuary in the Island of the Dolls, along with 15 other reserves cleared of predatory fish. However, there is local resistance to this idea since it may interfere with regional fishing commerce.Yahoo News: Mexico City's 'Water Monster' Nears Extinction (November 2, 2008) TreeHugger: Ubercool "Mexican Walking Fish" Nearing Extinction (November 5, 2008)
