Avianca or Aerovias del Continente Americano is the Colombian national air carrier. It is the oldest airline on the American continent and the second oldest in the world. It was founded in 1919. Today it has become one of the largest airline conglomerates in Latin America and is managed by the Synergy Group from Colombo-Brazilian entrepreneur German Efromovich.

Avianca Acquisitions

During the last five years Synergy begun a busy acquisition program adding numerous subsidiary airlines under Avianca's wings. Among these companies are OceanAir and TurbServ from Brazil, VIP and AeroGal from Ecuador, Tampa Cargo from Colombia and Capital Airlines from Nigeria. They all will be members of the AviancaPlus FF program along with older subsidiaries like SAM and Helicol.

In 2008, OceanAir was rebranded as Avianca Brazil and VIP as Avianca Ecuador. In October 2009 it was announced that there would be an acquisition of Brazilian cargo carrier VarigLog and a merger between Avianca and Salvadorian carrier TACA. Together, this will create one of the largest airlines in Latin America operating a combined fleet of 129 aircraft flying to over 109 destinations in America and Europe.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avianca#Avianca-TACA_alliance_.28since_2009.29
