Avatar DVD

Twentieth Century Fox and James Cameron's number one box office smash, Avatar, is being released on DVD and Blu-ray on Earth Day, April 22, 2010. http://www.hollywoodnews.com/2010/03/16/avatar-announces-dvd-release-date/

Fox said that Earth Day was chosen as the release date because it matches up with Avatar's environmental theme. The movie set the all time box office gross record ($2.7 billion, and counting) by passing another of Cameron's films, Titanic. http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSN1611067220100316

The DVD release on April 22nd will be a bare bones release without any special features. An enhanced edition of Avatar with special features is expected to be released sometime in November, 2010.http://homevideo.about.com/od/2010dvdreleases/fr/Avatar-DVD-a.htm

There is talk of a 3D version of Avatar being released in 2011. One of the reasons the first release dates of the DVD is in 2D is because not a lot of people have 3D television sets in their homes. Fox expects more people to have them by next year.http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSN1611067220100316

With the movie such a world wide hit, however, there is no reason to expect Avatar's momentum to slow down. Not all, people, though, were as enamored as the millions who poured into movie theatres and donned 3D glasses were.

Conservatives were less than pleased about the movie's over-all message. "I call it the 'liberal tell,' where the early and obvious politics of the film gives away the entire story before the second act begins, and 'Avatar' might be the sorriest example of this yet," wrote movie critic John Nolte.http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/politics-avatar-conservatives-attack-movies-political-messaging/story?id=9484885

MovieGuide called Avatar an "abhorrent New Age, pagan, anti-capitalist worldview that promotes Goddess worship and the destruction of the human race".http://www.slate.com/id/2241542/

Regardless of what the right side of the political debate, though, Avatar is an amazingly successful movie that entertained many of those who saw it and the DVD promises to be popular.
