Avalanche on Mars

On March 3, 2008 photographs of an avalanche on the planet Mars were released from NASA. The photos were taken from NASA's orbiting HiRISE camera and revealed billowing clouds of dust at the base of a tall slope where ice and dust fell.

Fast Facts:

  1. First person to notice avalanches was Ingrid Daubar Spitale of the University of Arizona, Tucson
  2. The cause of the avalanche is still unknown
  3. Scientists suspect more ice than dust fell with the avalanche
  4. The water from the ice that broke loose is expected to change from solid to gas substance
