Roger Penske built the California Speedway, now known as Auto Club Speedway, in 1997. It is now run by International Speedway Corporation after Penske and ISC merged their race tacks ownership/management business. It is a 2 mile long Tri oval configuration, and is knows as the sister track to Michigan International Speedway.
A tri oval means this track looks like a big D. There are only four official turns, but the front straightaway is not truly straight. It is a very lazy curve that forms the front side of the D shape. The front stretch is banked 11 degrees, the backstretch 3 degrees, and the turns are banked 14 degrees. http://www.scenedaily.com/races/tracks/15355071.html
The track was built on the former location of the Kaiser Steel Mill, and like most other tracks offers many different configurations. This track features a Road Course configuration through the infield, and also has a drag strip known as Auto Club Dragway.
In terms of NASCAR history this track has had a few notable events in its short history. Jeff Gordon won the very first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at this track on June 22, 1997. http://racing-reference.info/drivdet/gordoje01/1997/WNASCAR driver Kyle Busch would win his first Cup series race here on September 4, 2005. Kyle would go on to write more NASCAR history at this track on February 21, 2009 when he became the first driver to win two races among the top three NASCAR touring divisions when he won the Nationwide Series, and Camping World Truck Series races on the same day.
In all the track covers 568 acres of property and cost 120 million dollars to construct. http://www.nascar.com/2003/news/headlines/wc/04/25/btn_fontana/index.html It has 30 men’s and 30 women’s bathroom facilities. There are 32,000 paved parking spot for cars, and 117 paved parking spot for buses. In the infield there are 1,800 RV reserved spaces. In all the facility featured 13 concessions building, and 11 souvenir stands. To go along with eight first aid building and one infield care center. http://www.autoclubspeedway.com/Track-Info/Track-Facts.aspx
