Austroraptor Cabazai

Categories: Science | Nature | Biology
  • The Austroraptor cabazai is an extremely large version of the raptor dinosaur family that scientists have discovered in fossilized remains from the Patagonia region of Argentina. Scientists believe this dinosaur lived some 70 million years ago. The discovery represents the largest specimen of a class of dinosaurs called the dromaesaurid ever found in the southern hemisphere. The discovery brings with it some controversy regarding the proposed evolution of the raptors, since these remains date more closely to the end of the Cretaceous period than previously thought.National Geographic: "Bizzare" New Dinosaur: Giant Raptor... • History

The Austroraptor cabazai became extinct toward the end of the Cretaceous period. While other species of raptors have been found in South America, none have come close to the size of the Austroraptor. Given it's uniquely long head and conical teeth combined with it's short arms and stout legs, scientists believe it was a fierce fighting animal, in a league with the larger dinosaurs such as the T-Rex.National Geographic: "Bizzare" New Dinosaur: Giant Raptor...
