Background
In 1905, the Lawn Tennis Association of Australia (LTAA) created a tournament named ‘The Australasian men’s champions’ which was held at the Albert Reserve in Melbourne. In 1927, it changed its name as the ‘Australian Championship.’ Finally, in 1969 it became known as The Australian Open. In 1972 it moved to its current home in Melbourne and hasn't left. In 1987, the tournament switched from being played on grass to hardcourt. http://2009.australianopen.com/en_AU/event_guide/history.html
Australian Open 2010 Main News
The 2010 edition of the Australian Open men's competition focussed on the ongoing struggle between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal for the World's #1 position, held by Federer pre-tournament. Challengers were Novak Djokovic, Juan Martin Del Potro and Andy Murray.
The womens' competition marked the return of two Belgian players, Kim Clijsters Justine Henin, who both returned to professional tennis in 2009 after retiring well over a year earlier. Both have proven to be in good form, by facing off in the Brisbane Finals earlier in January. Clijsters is seeded 15th, while Henin is unseeded, and had to face Dementieva in her second round play.
The first round started with a big surprise, as Maria Sharapova lost her first round match against unseeded Maria Kirilenko. Except for Sharapova all female top 16 seeded players moved to the second round.http://www.australianopen.com/en_AU/players/index.html#women
Day six of the Australian Open proved to have some surprising results. The day saw two matches between Belgium and Russia. While unseeded Justine Henin continued to win with a difficult match against Alisa Kleibanova, her fellow countrywoman Kim Clijsters didn't stand a chance against her russian opponent Nadia Petrova. Clijsters only scored one game, losing 0-6, 1-6.
Earlier on the day, Jelena Jankovic was surprisingly eliminated by currently world ranked 30, Alona Bondarenko with clear numbers: 6-2 6-3
After a tough match in round two, Juan Martin del Potro had again a troublesome match in round three. After a 2,5 hour match, he managed to beat Florian Mayer 6-3 0-6 6-4 7-5.
Philipp Kohlschreiber gave Rafael Nadal quite some trouble. Nadal thought he had the match 'in the bag' after winning the first two sets, but Kohlschreiber won the third, and managed to keep up in the fourth. In the end, Nadal won the fourth set 5-7, leading to a four-set win: 4-6, 2-6, 6-2, 5-7.
