Australian Native Animals are some of the most genetically diverse on earth, due mostly to millions of years of isolation and a geographical lack of predators. Australian fauna adapted to a hotter climate approximately 15 million years ago, encouraging even more unique creatures.Rita's Outback Guide: Unique Australian Animals

Extinction
Australia has one of the worst records in the world in regards to species extinction. The two predominate reasons are a history of land clearing and introduction of predators that have no check and balance system. The practice of setting large grass fires to clear land has resulted in habitat destruction for many species. Many species have also had to contend with the introduction of predators such as foxes and feral cats. Another contributor is the culling of dingoes that would have otherwise kept the feral cat and fox population under control. Nearly half of all species extinction in the last 200 years has taken place in Australia. The Independent: Australia is Worst Nation on Earth at Preserving Wildlife -
