The Australian Liberal Party,better known as the Liberal Party of Australia, is one of the major political parties in Australia. It has frequently joined in a coalition government with the National Party.

Positions

The Australian Liberal Party supports minimal interference by the government in economic affairs. It also generally takes socially conservative positions. The party has been criticized for its support of the United States in the Iraq War.

Current Status

After 11 years in power, the Liberal Party, led by John Howard, was defeated in the Federal Election in November 2007. Howard resigned after the defeat, leaving Brendan Nelson as the opposition leader.

Howard Government First Term [[1996]] – [[1998]]

  1. Cut government programs to address a $10,000,000 budget deficit inherited from Labor
  2. Implemented stronger gun control standards
  3. Seven Liberal ministers forced to resign for ethics violations

Howard Government Second Term [[1998]] - [[2001]]

  1. Sent a peace-keeping force to Indonesia
  2. Refused to issue a governmental apology to indigenous Australians
  3. Implemented a Goods and Services Tax
  4. Introduced border-protection legislation

Howard Government Third Term [[2001]] - [[2004]]

  1. Sent troops to Iraq in 2003, in support of the Iraq War to overthrow Sadaam Hussein
  2. Introduced legislation, which passed the Senate, to define marriage as being between one man and one woman

Howard Government Fourth Term [[2004-2007]]

  1. Had control of both Houses of Parliament
  2. Sent additional troops to Iraq
  3. Work Choices laws,limiting union powers, passed in 2006
