  • Positions

    The Australian Liberal Party supports minimal interference by the government in economic affairs. It also generally takes socially conservative positions. The party has been criticized for its support of the United States in the Iraq War.
  • Current Status

    After 11 years in power, the Liberal Party, led by John Howard, was defeated in the Federal Election in November 2007. Howard resigned after the defeat, leaving Brendan Nelson as the opposition leader.
