  • Backstory

    Australia's first unions were "craft unions" made up of skilled workers such as shipwrights, boat builders and cabinet makers.Australian Council of Trade Unions: About Trade Unions These unions were followed by the shearers and miners, both of whom participated in major labor actions towards the end of the 19th century. Authorities used violence to break the strikes, leading the unions to organize politically. Their efforts to achieve representation in government led to the creation of the Australian Labor Party.
