Australian Grand Prix 2010

Part of the annual Formula One world championship, the Australian Grand Prix is held at Alberta Park in Melbourne, Australia. Prior to its inclusion in Formula One, the Australian Grand Prix was used for the Australian Drivers’ Championship from 1957 to the 80s. By 1985, it was already part of Formula One’s tracks and held at the Adelaide Street Circuit until the early 90s before it was moved to Melbourne in the year 1996.

The Australian Grand Prix is Formula One’s second round when it was moved to Melbourne but in its years in the Adelaide Street Cricuit, the Australian Grand Prix was the race track for the world championship’s final race replacing the race track in Portugal. The Australian GP hosted quite a lot of memorable Grand Prix such as the ones in 1986 and in 1994 when it witnessed the awarding of these year’s champs.

German racer Michael Schumacher and Lex Davidson are two of the most successful drivers in the Australian GP in its 82 year history. If you did not know that before, the Australian Grand Prix has been a staple race track in the pre-war period. Believed to have been first held in the year 1927 near the country’s capital, the very first official Australian GP was held in Philip Island’s road circuit in the year 1928. It was a 100 miles road race and was won by Arthur Waite who drove a modified Austin 7. It was first called the Australian Grand Prix in the year 1929, a year after its inception. In the Post-War era, racing was a bit sparse. The first post war GP in Australia was in 1947 which hosted a mix of sports cars and cars from the said country. Converted airfield circuits were used during that time and circuits like Leyburn, Nuriootpa, Point Cook and Narrogin were used before the GP returned to Mount Panorama in the 50s. http://www.grandprix.com.au/ http://www.heraldsun.com.au/story/0,21985,23970916-39478,00.html http://www.visitvictoria.com/displayobject.cfm/objectid.0007D3DC-C20F-1EB9-B70C80C476A90000/
