Australian Birds

Australian birds have evolved in complete isolation for the last 55 million years and hence birds can be found there that can be seen no where else on earth. Much of the continent was covered in rain forests until 15 million years ago when large areas began to dry out, creating an environment that demanded evolution for survival and even more unique birds.Rita's Outback Guide: Unique Australian animals

The oldest birds in Australia are parrots, cassowaries and emus originating during the era of Gondwana. Despite the visual similarity of the wrens and robins found in Australia, they are not genetically related to those found in the northern hemisphere.Rita's Outback Guide: Birdwatching

Aves

Scientists consider birds to have developed from the dinosaur, 150 million years ago during the Jurassic period. They have adapted over time for flight. Their feathers have evolved and adapted from reptile-like scales. Actual scales cover their feet. All birds lay eggs similar to those of reptiles. The Natural Science Museum Centre of the University of Naples: The Living Dinosaurs
