History Of Austin Zoo And Animal Sanctuary
The Austin Zoo began as a goat ranch, changing its name in 1990 to the Good Day Ranch. They took in animals that were unwanted or abandoned by their owners, along with wounded wildlife. In the beginning the animals mainly consisted of goats, ponies, pigs, and deer, with only a few exotics.
To date the zoo houses over 300 animals including more than 100 different species. Austin Zoo and Animal Sanctuary still receives requests to rescue animals taken from roadside zoos, however they are forced to deny these requests on the average of 200 a month.
The Austin Zoo is a non-profit organization relying on donations, entrance fees, grants, and sponsorships to operate.http://www.austinzoo.org/index.php?pid=138
