Augusten Burroughs is an American author whose 2002 best-selling memoir Running With Scissors was adapted into a feature film.
Career
Burroughs dropped out of school after the sixth grade, and obtained a GED at age 17. He worked his way up to a high-paying job in the advertising industry before leaving the field to become a writer. Augusten wrote his first book, Sellevision, in 2000. His first book was, unlike his following works, a fictional story drawing from his time in advertising. Two years after the publication of Sellevision, Augsten published his most recognized work, Running with Scissors. In addition to Scissors, Burroughs penned a second memoir in 2003, Dry, about his experience during and after his treatment for alcoholism. That was followed by two collections of essays, Magical Thinking and Possible Side Effects.
