  • Atrial fibrillation is the most common type of cardiac arrhythmia. During atrial fibrillation the two upper chambers of the heart, called the atria, beat irregularly with the two lower chambers, called the ventricles. This irregular beat causes poor blood flow. In most cases this irregular heart beat is rapid. Atrial fibrillation may come and go.
  • Cause

The most common cause of atrial fibrillation is damage, or an abnormality to the heart. Some of the possible causes of atrial fibrillation are high blood pressure, heart attack, an abnormal heart valve, sleep apnea or if you have had previous heart surgery.
  • Symptoms

When the heart is not pumping the proper amount of blood this can cause a drop in blood pressure. Other symptoms of atrial fibrillation include weakness, lightheadedness, confusion, shortness of breath and chest pain.
  • Treatment

The goal for the treatment of atrial fibrillation is to reset the heart beat to its normal rhythm and prevent blood clots. This is done with medications and procedure called cardioversion.

    2. Limit alcohol
