The Atlantic Sun Conference is a group of 11 member colleges from 5 southeastern states, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. Established in 1978, their motto, "Building Winners for Life" is indicative of their dedication to promoting academic and athletic success. The conference itself is part of the NCAA Division 1, with team participation in basketball.
Belmont won three straight titles in Atlantic Sun Conference in 2005 to 2008, they beat Jacksonville Dolphins 79-61, ETSU Buccaneers, 94-67, and Lipscomb Bisons 74-69. They are one of the six teams in the country to have earned its league's automatic bid in each of the last three seasons. Forward Shane Dansby of Belmont Bruins earned the tournament MVP in 2007-08 season.
Atlantic Sun 2009-10 Tournament
For the 5th consecutive year, General Shale Brick, an exterior building materials manufacturer, will be the primary sponsor for the Atlantic Sun Conference Basketball Championships. The event will be held at Mercer University inside the University Center. The A-Sun Tournament will begin on Mar. 3-6, 2010: Quarterfinals - March 3-4, Semifinals - Mar. 5, 2010 and the Championship Game - Mar. 6, 2010.
Eight teams, which are determined by their winning percentages in the conference, will compete in the single-elimination tournaments. The winner of the championship earns an automatic bid into the NCAA Championship. Florida Gulf Coast and USC Upstate will not be involved because they are in the process of being reclassified to Division 1.http://www.atlanticsun.org/mbasketball/champdetails
