The Atlantic Sun's Men's Basketball program is just one of the 17 sports recognized in the conference and are part of the NCAA Division 1. The members are primarily from the southeast USA made up of both public and private universities. Its primary goal is "Building Winners for Life" by combining academic excellence with athletic proficiency. In 1978, the Trans America Athletic Conference, as the conference was then known, was formed. Having achieved full NCAA Grade 1 status, the University Florida Northern and Kennesaw State are eligible to play in postseason play. In the 2008-2009 Championship, Courtney Pigram recorded his 2000th point, making him the second player in league history to do so. In the 2009-2010, James Florence of Mercer, and Jonathan Rodriguez of Campbell entered as the second- and third-highest active scorers in the nation.
Eight teams, which are determined by their winning percentages in the conference, will compete in the single-elimination tournaments. The winner of the championship earns an automatic bid into the NCAA Championship. Florida Gulf Coast and USC Upstate will not be involved because they are in the process of being reclassified to Division 1.http://www.atlanticsun.org/mbasketball/champdetails
