• Arwen Undomiel is a fictional character from J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth, the scene of his literary trilogy The Lord of the Rings. She is the daughter of Elrond, a powerful and wise elf, and the betrothed of Aragorn. In the films she is portrayed as a tragic figure who must choose between her immortal lineage and her love for Aragorn, and ultimately chooses to live a mortal life with him.
  • Inflated Film Role

Though Arwen played a major role in the film trilogy of The Lord of the Rings, her original role in the books was much, much smaller. She was Aragorn's betrothed in the books, but she did not have the romance that can be seen in the films. Additionally, the scene where she saved Frodo Baggins and his friends from the Ringwraiths did take place in the books, but it was performed by a male elf named Glorfindel, not Arwen. Some have speculated that her role was inflated to create a strong female character to offset all the displays of male might and competence, but this is doubtful since the human woman called Eowyn managed to strike down a Ringwraith, which is one of the most fearsome creatures in the entire trilogy.
