Russian surgeons found a five-centimeter fern embedded in the lungs of Artyom Sidorkin in April, 2009. Doctors were performing a biopsy on his lungs at time of the discovery. The biopsy was conducted because the physicians initially believed that the growth was a tumor, but later found that it was a fern that doctors speculate started growing after he inhaled a seed.FOX News: Surgeons Find Tree Growing Inside Man's LungFOX News: Surgeons Find Tree Growing Inside Man's Lung
After Sidorkin had been coughing up blood and was experiencing chest pain, he sought medical attention. An x-ray revealed what doctors thought was a tumor in his lungs and a biopsy was scheduled to determine the severity of the issue.FOX News: Surgeons Find Tree Growing Inside Man's LungWhen surgeon Vladimir Kamashev explored the area, he found green needles. He opened the area further to find a five-centimeter spruce tree growing in Sidorkin's lungs. Doctors believe that at one point Sidorkin inhaled a spruce seed. That seed then grew in his lungs, pushing against the veins. The growth pushed against the capillaries, causing pain and the expulsion of blood.Telegraph: Surgeons Find Fir Tree 'Growing Inside Patient's Lung'
Sidorkin stated that he did not feel a foreign object in the area, but was very thankful that he did not have lung cancer.Telegraph: Surgeons Find Fir Tree 'Growing Inside Patient's Lung'
