- Currently damaged discs are just removed leaving no support for the spinal structure except with spinal fusions and bone grafts. Note: There are a number of procedures that do NOT involve complete removal of the Disc Material. Partial Disectomy is very common from both an anterior and a posterior approach. Thre is medical literature to support Discectormy without fusion and the area between the vertebrae is filled with granulation tissue.
- At this time only one level replacement can be done at one time. Note: All procedures involve working on one level at a time. Multilevel ADR replacement surgery is becoming more common and is available to USA Doctors at the Discretion of the Physician and the ADR Manufacturer. They approve the DEVICE not the levels of treatment.
- Charité artificial disc is the first and most clinically tested total disc replacement in the world. Note: But that doesn't mean it is the best solution.
- The new system is placed in the spine through a small incision just below the belly button. Note: This is misleading, most procedures are still "Open" procedures and leave plenty of scar tissue.
- Charité artificial disc is made up of a plastic core sandwiched between two metal endplates
