Arsenal F.C.

Arsenal F.C., also known as The Gunners, are a professional soccer team that play in the English Premier League.

They are one of the most successful clubs in English football, having remained in the top flight for a record 82 consecutive seasons, and wining the league title 13 times.

In the summer 2009 transfer window, Arsenal sold Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Adebayor to Manchester City, and bought Thomas Vermaelen from Ajax.

Arsenal made a strong start to the 2009 season, winning 6-1 at Everton, 4-1 at home against Portsmouth, and beating Celtic 5-1 on aggregate in a Champions League qualifier. Their first loss came at Manchester United, following a penalty and and own goal in a game where they taken the lead.

Recent History

Arsenal were undefeated for a record 49 league games between May 2003 and October 2004, going through the entire 2003-4 season unbeaten.

Following the departure of the "Invincibles" generation, Arsenal have been rebuilding with a new squad of young players.They have not won a trophy in recent seasons, but reached the finals of the UEFA Champions League in 2006, and the semi-finals in 2009, losing to Barcelona and Manchester United respectively.

Early History

Originally founded in 1886 by workers at the Woolwich Armament Factory in South London, the Arsenal F.C. was first named Dial Square. In 1891 the team was renamed Woolwich Arsenal, when they turned into a professional football club. Shortly after World War I in 1904, they became part of the Football League First Division, which at the time was the top league in England.

During the 1930-1931 season, Arsenal F.C won their first championship, which they also won the following year. Since then they have won thirteen Premier League and First Division titles and ten FA Cups. In July 2006 the team moved into their new stadium, Emirates Stadium in Holloway, North London.
