  • History

Armenia has been a nation of shifting boundaries since the 6th Century. The country's national icon is Mount Ararat, which is now part of Turkey. Disputes with the Ottoman Turks—based on anti-Armenian prejudice, politics and territory—led to the 1915 Armenian Genocide at the hands of Turkish forces, the first such mass slaughter of the 20th Century. The modern Republic of Armenia was founded September 23, 1991, with the nation's secession from the Soviet Union.
