Led by the CY Young winning tandem of Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling, the Diamondbacks stormed through the regular season. The Diamondbacks would defeat the St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Division Series, three games to two, and then the Atlanta Braves in the National League Championship Series, 4 games to one. The Diamondbacks would then face the reigning champions New York Yankees. The series would go to seven games with the Diamondbacks winning in the bottom of the ninth of game seven with a single by Luis Gonzalez against Mariano Rivera.

2009: A Year of Struggles
The 2009 season saw the Diamondbacks struggle on the field. They ended the season at 70 and 92, putting them solidly in last place in the National League West, 25 games out of first and five games behind the next closest team in their division.
Dan Haren led a sluggish pitching staff with 14 wins, but racked up 223 strikeouts. Haren's strikeout total was good for third in the National League. His 229.1 innings pitched was also the second highest in the National League, behind only Adam Wainwright.
Justin Upton led the Diamondbacks with a .300 batting average. His 26 home runs was second on the team only to Mark Reynolds, who hit 44 on the season, but only batted at a .260 average.
