The National Football League (NFL) regular season starts the weekend after Labor Day. Prior to 1960, the number of games on each team's schedule varied but never exceeded 12 games. Then, from 1961-1977, the NFL went to a 14-game schedule played over 14 weeks. Currently, since 1978, the NFL schedule consists of 16 games. In 1990, the NFL introduced a bye-week to the schedule spreading the 16 games over a 17-week period.
