Almirola was the first to crash at the 2009 Daytona 500. The crash was minor and no injuries were incurred. Almirola crashed again during lap 146, when Kasey Kahne hit him from behind and pushed him off the track.

Due in part to the economic downturn, Almirola had not secured enough sponsorships to race in a complete 2009 NASCAR season.
