Features and Functions

The 4.8" TFT LCD touch screen displays 800x480 pixels resolution with 16 million of colors. It uses Linux as the operating system. Video, audio and image playback format support are quite extensive including MPEG-4, H.264, MP3, AAC, JPEG, and BMP.

The Archos 5 is one of the first devices that use the new ARM Cortex superscalar microprocessor. The ARM Cortex is power optimized for multimedia mobile devices. [1]

The Internet (using Opera web browser with Adobe Flash 9 support) and (POP3 and IMAP) email connectivity is available via built-in 802.11 b/g WiFi. For web browsing, the Archos 5 is capable of displaying web pages in a full format. Unread e-mails are displayed on the home screen for easy access. Most e-mail functionalities are available such as replying to an e-mail and sending attachments.

One of the notable features of Archos 5 is web based TV or radio stations access. A special menu provides easy access to news, sports and music channel (up to 1,000 web TV stations and over 10,000 web radio stations) without opening the web browser. The web radio station can be used as the source for the alarm clock. In addition to TV viewing, Archos 5 has the ability to schedule and record TV shows using the optional DVR station.

Supported operating systems are Microsoft Windows ME or later, Mac OS X and Linux (with mass storage device support). Included items are USB cable, DVR station adapter, and screen cleaning cloth. [2]

Reviews

CNET.com: The Archos 5 boasts an improved screen size, image resolution, and sound quality over its predecessor, but its Web browser and Flash media playback are disappointing for a product marketed on the strength of its Internet media capabilities. [1]

InfoSync: Archos has seriously stepped up their game with the Archos 5 Wi-Fi enabled Portable Media Player. [2]

MediaPlayerInfo.com: Overall, the Archos 5 is a competent media player that has the potential to expand into a comprehensive, all-in-one device. [3]
