The Internet Archive (IA) is a non-profit organization and an Internet library, a permanent collection of digital information published on the Web, including text, audio, video, software and archived web pages.
The purpose of the Archive is to assist historians and other scholars in their research, as well as to provide the general public with a free access to digital age historical records.
Currently, the Archive runs on Unix/ Linux based architecture, and making a full use of it requires some programming skills. The Wayback Machine is one of the tools developed to provide easy-to-use access to individual Web pages. Work is underway on developing an interface that will provide users with an easy access to entire data collection, including Web snapshots and Usenet postings.
The Internet Archive is a member of the American Library Association.

History
The Internet Archive was founded in 1996 by Brewster Kahle.Prior to his work on the Archive, Kahle invented WAIS, the Internet's first publishing system, and in 1996 he co-founded Alexa Internet together with Bruce Gilliat.
The Archive has been steadily expanding ever since its inception, and it currently has data centers in San Francisco, Redwood City and Mountain View, containing an estimated 3 petabytes of data, and growing at a rate of 100 terabytes per month.
In 2009, the Internet Archive migrated its customized storage architecture to Sun Open Storage, hosted by a Sun Modular Datacenter, California.
