Developed by California-based Aptera Motors, the Aptera Typ-1 is a "high-efficiency vehicle" capable of achieving 130 mpg for its hybrid version. Two models of the Typ-1 will be available: an all-electric version and a Plug-in hybrid version. Aptera plans to release the all-electric Typ-1 in 2008 and the hybrid Typ-1 in late 2009. The Typ-1 is initially being made available only to residents of California.
Aptera Motors is one of 111 automotive teams planning to race in the Progressive Automotive X Prize, a $10 million road race that will test whether practical vehicles are capable of getting 100 miles per gallon or better.Wall Street Journal: Teams Race to Build Super-Fuel-Efficient Car (April 7, 2009)
