April 4, 1968, written by Michael Eric Dyson, chronicles that fateful day in 1968 that Martin Luther King Jr. was shot and fatally wounded just hours after giving his last speech and saying these now-famous words, "I may not get there with you, but I want you to know tonight, that we as a people will get to the Promised Land."
The book was written to provide readers with a fresh look at the life and times of Martin Luther King Jr. and how we can use his death and legacy in today's times.
Michael Eric Dyson also uses the book as a chance to reevaluate the fate of Black America since Mr. King's death 40 years ago. He delves into the various ways that Black America has indeed made it into the "promised land" that Martin Luther King Jr. spoke of and the mistakes that the American culture has made in the journey towards racial justice.
The book also reviews other Black Americans that have been leaders since the death of Mr. King, from Jesse Jackson to Barack Obama.
