Apple Inc. is a company that develops and markets consumer electronics, such as desktop computers, tablet computers and smartphones. They also design software for its proprietary Mac OS X operating system, as well as other computing platforms. Apple operates a retail chain of Apple Stores and the iTunes online music store.

In May 2009, rumors began circulating that Apple would offer $700 million to buy the micro-blogging site Twitter. On January 14, 2009, Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced that he was going to "take a medical leave of absence until the end of June" because his "health-related issues" were "more complex" than he originally thought.
