Introduced in October 2008, Apple LED Cinema Display is a major update to the previous Apple display product line.MacRumours: [1] It is the first Apple screen that uses LED backlighting. It has glossy black reflective screen with silver colored back.. The 24 inch replaced the previous 23 inch model. The design carries the same style as previously released MacBook and MacBook Pro with a built-in iSight video camera.

The Apple LED Cinema Display comes with one year warranty and free 90 days telephone technical support. Just like other Apple products the warranty can be extended for up to three years. [2]

The current price of the 24 inch Apple LED Cinema Display is $894 (plus shipping and tax). [3]

On March 18, 2010, AppleInsider reports that Apple is rumored to release the 27-inch version of the Apple LED Cinema Display - the second LED backlit display from the company. It is also rumored that the 27-inch display features 2560 by 1440 pixels screen resolution. The planned released date is June 2010. [4]

Features and Functions

The enclosure is made from aluminum and the screen is made from glossy glass. The 24-inch features built-in iSight video camera, mic and speakers, Mini DisplayPort, MagSafe (powers and charges MacBook) and three self-powered USB ports and Kensington security slot. The speakers are located at the bottom of the screen behind the metal grill.

The Apple LED Cinema Display is compatible with most Mac Pro, Mac mini, iMac and new MacBook family with DisplayPort connector. For other type of connectors, an optional adapter is available (e.g. Mini Display Port to DVI or VGA for $29).

The 24-inch widescreen display is capable of displaying 1920x1200 pixels with 16.7 million colors. Other supported resolutions are 1280 by 800 pixels and 1024 by 640 pixels. The viewing angels are 178 degrees both horizontal and vertical utilizing IPS (in-plane switching). With IPS, color consistency can be maintained from any viewing angel. It is compatible with optional VESA Mount Adapter Kit.

There is no power button on the unit as the display switches on automatically when connected to a powered device (e.g. a MacBook). When the MacBook is removed, the display automatically turns off. Other things absence are brightness and speaker volume controls. [1]

According to Apple, the LED Cinema Display is environmentally friendly. This is due to the usage of arsenic-free display glass, free of harmful toxins, and highly recyclable glass and aluminum materials. [2]

Reviews

CNET.com: While performance is excellent, the Apple LED Cinema Display's one connection option paints it into a small corner that is welcoming only to newer MacBook owners. http://reviews.cnet.com/lcd-monitors/apple-led-cinema-display/4505-3174_7-33418352.html

AppleInsider: The picture is vivid, the sound is great for the class, and the design is both eye-catching and at times handy. We just hope that more Macs and Windows PCs can recognize Mini DisplayPort and that Apple doesn't end up sacrificing a large chunk of its display sales to high-end customers in the name of those few mainstream buyers who can spend the money Apple would like. http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/12/07/apples_led_cinema_display_the_review.html&page=1

Engadget: The 24-inch LED Cinema Display is a well thought-out product. It's the first display that isn't ashamed to be built for notebook owners, and the simple inclusions that make it unique are incredibly handy and entirely useful. http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/15/apples-24-inch-led-cinema-display-review/
