The campus of Appalachian State University was in lockdown on March 3 as police searched the area for an armed gunman. All classes for the day were canceled but remained scheduled for the following day. On March 4, 2008, Matthew Haney, the student who had reported seeing the gunman, admitted that he had made the story up, and that there never was a gunman.
