Appalachian Mountains is a system of mountains divided into several ranges. The USGS defines the physiographic division as consisting of thirteen provinces: The Atlantic Coast Uplands, Eastern Newfoundland Atlantic, Maritime Acadian Highlands, Maritime Plain, Notre Dame And Megantic Mountains, Western Newfoundland Mountains, Piedmont, Blue Ridge, Valley And Ridge, St. Lawrence Valley, Appalachian Plateaus, New England province, and the Adirondack provinces. The Adirondack provinces are sometimes not included in the mountain range.
For many, a main aspect of the Appalachian range involves a 2000 mile-long hiking trail known as the Appalachian Trail. The A.T. extends between Springer Mountain in Georgia and Mount Katahdin in Maine and was the world's first official long-distance footpath.
