Apia is the capital of Samoa. The largest city in Samoa, Apia has a population of 37,708. The city is located on the central north coast of Upolu, the second largest island in Samoa. Apia is the only city in the country and belongs to the politcal district of Tuamasaga. The boundaries of the Apia Urban Area stretch from Letogo Village to Vaitele. Apia was founded in 1850 and has been the capital of the country since 1959. The city got its name from Apia Village in Samoa. Apia History
In March 1889, Apia was the location of naval standoff where seven ships from the United States, Germany, and Britain refused to leave the harbor while a typhoon was headed to the area. All seven ships were sunk with the exception of the British ship Calliope. Almost 200 German and American deaths happened as a result of the typhoon.
