1978 Camp David Peace Agreement
After twelve days of negotiations, Egyptian President Anwar El Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin signed a peace treaty involving the two countries on September 17, 1978. During the negotiations, moderated by President Jimmy Carter, two agreements were established: A Framework for Peace in the Middle East and A Framework for the Conclusion of a Peace Treaty between Egypt and Israel. The first agreement addressed the West Bank and the Gaza strip with regard to a self-governing authority. The second agreement dealt with the conflicts in the Sinai peninsula in which Israel agreed to withdraw forces, and restore the region to Egypt. United States involvement in the negotiations included annual payments to both Israel and Egypt for six and eighteen years respectively.
