Career Overview
Hegarty released his debut album on the independent label Durtro and an EP follow-up in 1998. After being recruited by Lou Reed to participate in his concept album The Raven, "Antony and the Johnsons" were signed to the label Secretly Canadian, which re-released his debut album in 2004.
In 2005, Antony and the Johnsons released their second full-length album, I Am a Bird Now, to an enthusiastic reception, winning that year's Mercury Music Prize for Best Album of the Year and ranking on numerous critical Top 10 lists.
Themes
Hegarty explores a variety of themes throughout his music, particularly relating to alienation, sexual ambiguity and transgenderism. Inspired by British synth pop and torch singers of the 1970s, he's frequently cited as a member of the so-called New Weird America folk movement.
