At the age of 15 Villaraigosa became heavily involved in the labor movement as a volunteer with the farm workers movement, later he served as a field representative and organizer for the United Teachers of Los Angeles.Prior to his service as mayor, Villaraigosa was a member of the California State Assembly representing the 45th District, Speaker of the California State Assembly, and Los Angeles City Councilman representing the 14th District.
